Hashimotos Disease and Leg Pain

I have suffered with Hashimoto's Disease, or Hypothyroidism most of my adult life and let me tell you, it is no walk in the park.  I am under a doctor's care and visit twice a year for checkups. This year, more than ever, I have been suffering with a lot of leg and calf pain.  It is to the point that I can't sleep at night and I sit with my legs up all day.  I keep telling myself that the weather is probably effecting it, and perhaps it may be a bit, but I did a bit of research today to look for ways to holistically help with the pain.

According to Holistic Thyroid Care, the pain can be caused by calcium and magnesium deficiencies.  It also states that eating leafy green vegetables like spinach and broccoli can help.  Nuts, beans and bananas are also great sources for magnesium.  One important point that I read is that people, like myself, with Hashimoto's disease should never eat raw vegetables.  They should be blanched or steamed before consumption.  The reason is because cruciferous vegetables are goitrogens and can suppress thyroid function.  The cooking process releases the goitrogens to leave them safe to enjoy.

Here is a list of cruciferous vegetables

Arugula
BokChoy
Broccoli
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Collard Greens
Kale
Mustard Greens
Radish
Turnip
Watercress

What are the benefits of cruciferous vegetables?  Here is a chart that is posted  Dr.Axe.com that explains them well.

Other ways to help with leg pain is by taking supplements like gingko biloba, in pill or liquid extract form.  This will help dilate blood vessels, increase blood flow throughout the body and help with muscle cramps.

Electrolytes, like calcium, potassium and magnesium supplements are important.  People, like myself, who have Hashimoto's disease, sometimes do not have the ability to adsorb  these electrolytes,  Therefore, supplements are required to help with the deficiencies or imbalances.  You can have the healthiest diet and still suffer from this problem.  If you don't like taking magnesium, you can try topical versions, like magnesium oil or lotion.  You can also try Magnesium bath products for muscle cramps.

There are also products like Pure Encapsulations Muscle Cramp/Tension Formula, which I have read is very good and will be purchasing. You can read more about it, by visiting the link attached to the photo.

Remember to always visit and speak to your doctor before starting any kind of supplement regimen or any diet.  She or he will know what is best for you.  This post is only advice which I am using for myself.

If you have personally suffered from leg and calf pain due to Hashimoto's disease, I would love to hear what you do to help relieve it.
