As if deciding to have a family pet wasn’t a hard enough decision, you’re then faced with choosing what kind of pet to get. Pets come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common. They can be incredibly fun and rewarding. However, not all pets are suitable for every lifestyle. If you decided it’s time to invite a pet into your family, here are some tips to help you choose the perfect one.

What are You Looking for in a Pet?

You need to ask yourself a number of different questions. For example, is the family looking for a pet that likes lots of cuddles or is it an exercise partner that’s required? Who is going to be taking care of the pet and do they have any experience? There are pets that are more active at night, which might be the perfect pet if you’ve got young children.

Are There any Local Laws or Housing Rules to Consider?

If you live in rented accommodation, your landlord may have certain rules you need to abide by. Likewise, if you live in an apartment block, the housing association may have restrictions with regards to owning pets. Whether you live in the city, the suburbs or out in the countryside is also going to affect your choice of pet.

What Level of Care and Attention Can You Provide?

Pets tend to live for varying lengths of time. If you choose a dog, for example, it will require many years of commitment to its care. Fish, on the other hand, have much shorter lifespans. Different species and animals also have differing needs. A dog requires regular exercise and stimulation. They don’t like being left on their own for long periods of time either. When choosing a pet do some research and be aware of the commitment you’re making.

Can You Cover the Cost of Owning a Pet?

Certain costs have to be covered when owning a pet and there are certain species or breeds that require additional cost or effort. When thinking about pets needs consider food, housing, socialization, grooming, exercise, and veterinary care.

Are You Always at Home?

Does your job involve working long hours or do you travel frequently? Is there someone at home for most of the day or would your pet be left alone for several hours? When it comes to owning a dog, there are options for owners who have to work or travel. Visit premierdogwalkers.com if you want to know more.
Alternatively, there are countless other animals that don’t require constant care, companionship and attention. A cat, for example, can be left free to wander your neighborhood when you’re not at home. Rabbits, fish, reptiles, mice and guinea pigs also require little care and attention. As long as you’re able to feed them when necessary, they pretty much keep themselves occupied.

If you’ve done your research and still aren’t sure which pet is right for your family you should talk to a veterinarian. They’ll be able to help you better understand pets needs and whether they’ll suit your family lifestyle.
