4 Things To Do If Your Take A Long Vacation

Taking a vacation can be a fun and relaxing thing to do. However, when it comes to a long vacation that will last two weeks or more there could be things to take care of before going. Oh, sure there will be hotel reservations, the plane tickets, perhaps the cruise tickets. If your a going overseas there would be making sure your passport is up to date or have one issued. Having your money exchanged for foreign currency, anddeciding what to bring. But there will be other things to consider as well, that won't necessarily have anything to do with the vacation itself but are just as important, to take care of beforehand. Here are four important things to take care of before embarking on an extended vacation.

Put a Hold on Mail and Newspaper Delivery

This is always an advisable thing to do when being away on vacation. Especially when you don't have a trusted neighbor who can hold these for you. Putting a hold on the newspaper requires no more than a simple phone call to ask that a temporary hold be put on. In the case of the mail, it could be a bit more complex, you would have to go to the actual post office. For example, if you live in Lincoln Park, you would have to take a trip to the Lincoln Park Post Office to fill out the necessary form.

Electricity and Lights

We may not stop to think about the amount of electricity that some household appliances use on a daily basis, especially the ones that are never turned off and our continuously running. For example, the refrigerator, the freezer, the water heater, and the AC system. Even the ones that aren't in use but remained plugged in use a certain amount of wattage. So a good idea to unplug things such as a coffee maker, television along with the washer and dryer. When it comes to the refrigerator and the freezer take the opportunity to clean these out by either eating the food or donating it. these can be unplugged as well, the water heater and AC could have a vacation setting which put them on hold, which can be activated.

Keep Home Secure

If you have a security system, notify them that you are going to be out of town for a while so they will be on the alert. Another thing to do is many of us love to go out to social media and share things such as a vacation, not a wise thing to do, burglars tend to prowl these places to find a good target. Also, when it comes to lights in your home, there are apps that your security system or can be purchased online that can activate these wherever you are. This will give the illusion that someone is home and again will deter a burglar away from the home.

Keep Information with Family or Friends

Here is one other important thing to do while away for an along period of time. Give your vacation itinerary to a close relative or friend. This is a good idea in case something does come up while you are away or if they are taking care of your pets. It is also a good thing to do for security purposes for yourself so that someone will know exactly where you planned to go.

A vacation is supposed to ba a relaxing time in your life. So, before embarking on it, always take the time to put things in order first.

  1. Yep, these are definitely things you must do. I'm amazed at the people who post photos of their vacation all along the way. You should only allow family and friends to have access to photos you post on Facebook, etc.

  2. These are good tips. We installed home security cameras last Spring before we went on vacation and we have two different neighbors check the house daily.
