Zoo Guardians Mobile Game Celebrates First Anniversary!

Over 150,000 App Downloads and 1.2 Million Endangered Animals Adopted

El Segundo, CA – (August 16, 2021) Zoo Guardians, the mobile game by JumpStart Games and Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute, celebrates one year of teaching players about endangered species. Since launching on August 14, 2020, Zoo Guardians mobile game has brought the furry, feathered and scaly world of zoos, animal care and conservation to over 150,000 young gamers and animal-lovers around the world!

Working as part of the Zoo Guardians Initiative, players defend against climate change, deforestation and habitat loss threatening animals’ survival. Players create their own custom zoo, with the goal to adopt upwards of 67 species across eight biomes, and raise them to peak wellness before relocating them into the wild or to accredited animal care and conservation institutions to help repopulate and secure species’ survival. To date, Zoo Guardians players have successfully relocated, adopted and built habitats for thousands of virtual animals.

Zoo Guardians By the Numbers:

  • Animals Adopted: Over 1.2 million animals

  • Animals Relocated: Over 579,300 animals

  • Habitats Built: Over 727,700 habitats

  • Enrichment Items Added: Over 158,300 items

“By connecting with our players through the power of games, Zoo Guardians is cultivating a thriving community of animal and gaming enthusiasts, fostering a deep understanding of zoo dynamics and animal care,” said Julianne May, Associate Marketing Manager at JumpStart Games. “We are inspired by the 150,000 players who have downloaded our game and expressed a passion for conservation. This interest in animals transfers to the real world, and we are ecstatic to be a part of this partnership with the Smithsonian's National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute.”

“Saving species is a generational effort,” said Pamela Baker-Masson, Associate Director of Communications and Exhibits at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute. “Meeting kids where they are—on their phone—is a critical way to inspire young Zoo Guardians to care for animals and the environment, in their virtual zoos and in the real world.”

Zoo Guardians is free and available to download in the App Store and on Google Play. It is rated E for Everyone and recommended for players ages 9 and above. Players can continue their Zoo Guardians journey on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter or using the hashtag #ZooGuardians.

About the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute leads the Smithsonian’s global effort to save species, better understand ecosystems, and train future generations of conservationists. The Zoo instills a lifelong commitment to conservation through engaging experiences with animals and the people working to save them. Founded in 1889, the Zoo is home to 2,700 animals representing more than 390 species. More than 200 scientists and their partners, in more than 30 countries, create and share knowledge to aid in the survival and recovery of species and their habitats.
