I was given the opportunity to interview Taylor Sutherland about Charlie’s Soap. Here is my interview:

1. What made you and your family decide to create this product line?

In 1976, my dad, Charlie, Jr., was making specialty oils for textile mills in North Carolina, and the oils were great for their purpose, but part of that process involved washing the oils off of the yarn that it was put on, AND NOTHING would remove the oils.  They tried everything, but before he gave up, he reverse-engineered his own oil and create a cleaner specifically for his oil.  It worked, and not just on that oil and those yarns, but any stain on any surface.  And a legacy was born.

2. What was the first Charlie’s Soap product that helped put the company on the map?
Back in the day, it was just "Charlie's Soap," a gallon of all purpose cleaner that was available only in one store.  But it was so popular, it would sell a pallet every other week.  But Dad wasn't a marketer, and just a tinkerer, so it stayed in that one store for over a decade.  Fast forward to 2007.  My brothers and I have branded it and put out a new product, a LAUNDRY POWDER, based on the same chemistry.  A blogger who specialized in talking all things cloth diapers recommended us to her fan-base, and it just blew up.  After that, Amazon picked us up, and Whole Foods expanded and other retailers followed.

3. What was the hardest part about making this line a reality?
Education.  People have been told for a hundred years that perfume = clean.  They haven't been told that perfumes are chemicals that have been left behind, and if you left something BEHIND, you can't have possibly cleaned the dirt AWAY.  So everyone is walking around all the time with perfumey B.O.  When you switch to Charlie's Soap, it might take a wash or 3 to dig through all that residue, but after that, it's nothing but clean, clean, forever...so you can get back to life.

4. Do you have any new products up your sleeve for the near future?
We are expanding our Pre-Spray size to be more competitively priced (32 oz for $9.99).  We're researching Charlie's Soap W/ Oxygen Bleach, and also a dishwashing tablet.

5. What would you most like consumers to know about Charlie’s Soap that will entice them to purchase  your products?
It's a new experience of clean.  We were born in the textile industry, not a focus group.  We are the perfect fit for traditional buyers looking for something a little safer and ecologically minded, and we're the perfect fit for natural buyers looking for something that cleans like the traditional brands.  We just take a new approach to cleaning that means don't leave ANYTHING behind that isn't supposed to be there.  That means your clothes, and even your washer, will last longer because they aren't gunked up with residues.
