Ways to Relieve Stress During the Holidays

The holidays are here and so is the stress of making sure everything is perfect... the home, the gifts, the food.  Here are some things that you can do to help relieve some of the stress of the holidays.

1.  Take a deep breath.  Deep breaths can help you take a break and calm down.  Once in a while, take a seat and relax.  Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself.  After all, the holidays are suppose to be enjoyable.  So enjoy!

2.  Do good for others.  Doing good for others brings a sense of calm and satisfaction.  Volunteering at local shelters and helping others in need is a perfect way to do that.  Remember, you reap what you sew.

3. Take a walk.  Get outside and clear your head.  A nice brisk walk or stroll helps to boost your mood and gives you a change of scenery when you need it.

4. Don't over spend!  There is no reason to spend tons of money during the holidays.  Why create bills you don't need?  A batch of homemade cookies or a hand made gift is just fine.

5. Don't over indulge.  The foods you eat during the holiday can cause bloating, gas and nausea.  Eat small portions and give your brain a chance to tell you that you're full.  Remember, you can always have left overs tomorrow.

6. Sing Christmas carols.   A recent article from UNR.edu states that music can have a profound effect on the emotions of the body.  A slower tempo can quiet your mind and relax your muscles, making you feel soothed while releasing the stress of the day.  So go ahead and sing along with your guests!

7. Make reservations.  If the thought of preparing a big meal, doing dishes, cleaning and shopping for a big meal, along with cooking it all is stressing you out, make reservations or better yet, let someone else host.

I hope these tips can help you relax for the holidays.  Enjoy!

  1. Definitely, people take on too much responsibility during the holidays, whether it's cooking or spending. We all need to learn to let some things go, I guess.
