Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you  Maintaining healthy teeth takes dedication to your oral hygiene.  This includes regular visits to your dentist

Here are some tips to help keep your smile looking its best.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Making annual or even biannual visits to the dentist is important to your dental health and should be a priority  Finding a professional dental firm like Gallery Dental, can make your visits to the dentist more relaxing and pleasant.  They use state of the art technology in their modern facility to provide exceptionally high sterilization standards and provide maximum comfort for their clients.

Brush Your Teeth More Often

You should be brushing your teeth at least twice a day, after meals.   A toothbrush with a small head is a better choice because it gives you better access to your back teeth.  You should also look for a brush with soft bristles that will be gentle on your gums.  Be sure to brush for at least two to three minutes to ensure your teeth are thoroughly cleaned.

Fluoride Is Your Teeth's Best Friend

Your teeth need fluoride to help harden its enamel and to help reduce the risk of cavities. Fluoride can be found in foods, certain waters, supplements by prescription, in toothpastes and mouthwashes.  The fluoride you take in from these continue to provide topical benefits to your mouth because they become part of your saliva and continue to bathe your teeth in tiny amounts of fluoride to help rebuild weakened tooth enamel.

Don't Forget to Floss

Brushing your teeth is great, however if you are not flossing, you can be missing food and particles that get trapped between and beneath the gum line.  What's worse is that little colonies of bacteria start to affect your roots and teeth and gums.  Flossing is a simple process and should be done in a slow and gentle sawing motion.

Choose Your Diet Wisely

Limit acidic drinks and sugary foods.  Acids tend to soften teeth and also dissolve minerals in the enamel.  This can cause cavities and can destroy the teeth down to the roots.   Sugars become acids from bacteria in dental plaque.

Protect Your Teeth During Exercise and Sports

Keeping your mouth protected when you play any kind of physical sport, or sport that can damage teeth is important.  You should always wear a mouth guard and in some cases a full face helmet when playing sports.  If you have a ball or puck or stick that can hit you in the face, that should be an indicator that you need to keep it protected.

Save Your Teeth

If you lose a permanent or adult tooth, try to put it back in place and bite on a handkerchief to hold it in position and get to a dentist immediately.  If you can not put it back in position, place it in milk and contact your dentist immediately.  There is always a possibility that the tooth can be saved .

Don't Use Your Teeth as a Tool

Your teeth weren't made to be bottle openers, musical instruments or package openers.  They were meant for eating food.  Every time you use your teeth for something they aren't intended for, you risk cracking, chipping or breaking them.

Chew Gum Wisely

Chewing gum has some benefits, provided you are choosing the proper gum.  Limit your gum to sugar free and make sure it is approved by the American Dental Association.  These gums meet objective requirements for safety and efficacy of dental products.

If you follow these simple rules, they can help keep your smile pretty as a picture.

  1. I've always tried to take care of my teeth. I do really wish they were whiter though. I'd like to have them whitened.
