6 Signs Your Pet is Feeling Unwell

Unlike humans, your pets cannot tell you directly when they are feeling slightly under the weather. Instead, it is up to us to be aware of the signs that this is the case, and know when it is time to seek out professional treatment and assistance. Here are six sure-fire signs that your pet is due a visit to the vet.

Fatigue
It is likely that something is amiss if you notice a sudden change in your pet’s energy levels. Lethargy, especially when accompanied by a reluctance to eat or drink, is a good indication that your pet is uncomfortable or in pain.

Excessive drinking
It is obviously a good thing for your dog or cat to drink plenty of water, especially when temperatures start to soar. However, drinking excessively can indicate a number of dangerous diseases and conditions, most of which will require the expertise of a trusty vet, such as those at easyvet Frisco. This symptom could mean that your pet is suffering from diabetes mellitus, Cushing's disease, or even full-blown kidney failure. While you shouldn’t assume the worst, it is always better to be safe than sorry!

Lack of appetite
As mentioned above, your pet is likely feeling rotten if they are refusing to eat or are eating a lot less than they usually do. Unless this lack of appetite is accompanied with more severe symptoms, it is often fine to wait 24 hours to see if it improves on its own. If they are still reluctant to eat the following day, it is time to seek help.

Stiffness
Stiff joints or showing difficulty climbing stairs is a sign that your pet may be suffering from arthritis. Arthritis is surprisingly common. In fact, one in every four dogs is diagnosed with some form of arthritis in his lifetimeand over 50% of all cats over the age of six will have arthritis in at least one of their joints. The good news, however, is that the condition can be managed, especially if it is treated early on.

Itchy skin
It is normal for a dog or cat to scratch from time to time. However, there could be an underlying problem at play if you notice that it is happening more and more frequently. Itchy skin can be a symptom of a variety of different health issues, including:
• Fleas and other parasites
• Allergies (both environmental and food allergies)
• Anxiety

Labored breathing and panting
As with many of the other symptoms discussed above, a certain amount of panting in pets is considered normal behavior. There are times, however, when it may be a sign of a life-threatening condition. Panting is considered abnormal when it takes place extremely frequently, at times when the animal is unlikely to be feeling hot, and when it is accompanied by a rasping sound. In some instances, pets may pant when they are in pain, and it can also be a sign of lung disease and heart failure.
If ever in doubt that your pet is unwell, make that trip to the vet. After all, you can never be too cautious when it comes to your furry best friend!

  1. Oh I know that feeling when you just know your dog is sick, but you have no idea what's wrong. If only they could tell you where it hurts.
