THAMES & KOSMOS EXPANDS AWARD-WINNING LINE OF STEM KITS

THAMES & KOSMOS EXPANDS AWARD-WINNING LINE OF STEM KITS AND WORLD-FAMOUS BOARD GAME TITLES, LAUNCHES INTO CRAFTS, WITH EXCITING NEW PRODUCT OFFERINGS AT THE 2020 NEW YORK TOY FAIR

Thames & Kosmos, leading publisher of award-winning science kits, educational toys, and board games for kids of all ages, prepares to expand its growing list of groundbreaking product offerings in 2020. Since its founding nearly 200 years ago, Thames & Kosmos has solidified its place as an industry leader in the STEM toy space and has quickly grown to become a trusted source for unique and fun board games for the whole family. With the start of a new decade, the growth of these categories remains steady, while the company also announces its foray into a new branch of toys altogether with a line of beautiful and distinctive craft kits that promise to be one of the most innovative new products at the show. All new items are now on display at New York Toy Fair from February 22-25 in Booth #2851.

Year after year, Thames & Kosmos develops new and creative ways to strengthen young minds and enhance a child’s educational journey through fun, yet comprehensive, science kits. With twenty-two new STEM experiment kits in the 2020 line-up, this year is no exception. From robotics to alternative energy to chemistry to human anatomy, these new products offer a wide variety of scientific topics for young children to explore.

“It’s important to us that our STEM kits don’t just focus on the finished product, but on the educational journey kids take to get to that end result—that’s where we hide the learning!” explains Andrew Quartin, CEO of Thames & Kosmos. “Our job is to give kids the tools they need to investigate the world around them, to transform their curiosity into knowledge. In the case of new releases like Super Duper Bubble Gum Lab and Mega Cyborg Hand, kids end up with yummy bubble gum and a truly awe-inspiring, gigantic hydraulic hand. But first, they must go through the process of mixing the ingredients or assembling their mechanical hand piece by piece. This process is so important, not just for its potential to instill an interest in and appreciation for STEM, but for its ability to exercise a child’s mind.”

Given Thames & Kosmos’ commitment to producing high-quality, informative, and enjoyable STEM toys, the company was particularly humbled to learn that two of its best-selling STEM kits from 2019 have been nominated for the prestigious Toy of the Year Awards (TOTY). These annual awards, presented by The Toy Association and voted on by retailers, consumers, and members of the press, recognize the top toys of the holiday season. Up for consideration are My Robotic Pet – Tumbling Hedgehog in the Construction Toy of the Year category and Gumball Machine Maker in the all-new category of STEM/STEAM Toy of the Year. This new category was a welcome addition to the TOTY program, and the selection of Gumball Machine Maker as a finalist in its inaugural year is very fitting. The perfect melding of STEM and fun, this kit is a prime example of what Thames & Kosmos aims to do with everything in its STEM line: teach important scientific concepts in a fun, engaging way.

Thames & Kosmos will be introducing a variety of new products in 2020 as well as delivering expansions and additions to award-winning science kit lines such as Kids First™, I Dig It!™, and Ooze Labs™. The majority of these releases are screen-free—a reaction to the steady public demand for these types of products and an example that “techy” doesn’t always need to go hand in hand with a tablet or smartphone.

“We have a really diverse and exciting line-up this year. Our goal is to make STEM engaging and relatable for kids of all ages: kids ages five to seven can build cute animal robots and classic wacky robots with Robot Pet Shop and Robot Factory and they’ll learn all about gyroscopic forces as they assemble and experiment with The Amazing Tightrope-Walking Gyrobot—a robot fit for the circus! Then there’s Ooze Labs Colorful Crystal Lab (the new setup for our Ooze Labs chemistry line), and the Gross Anatomy kit where kids will study human anatomy by actually making their own squishy models of vital human organs. And this is just a portion of the new STEM products we have in the pipeline for this year! We’re very excited for retailers to check them out firsthand and for families to have the chance to try them out for themselves,” says Ted McGuire, president of Thames & Kosmos.

Thames & Kosmos is also enthusiastic about its launch into the craft category with Creatto, a new line of light-up crafting kits. The kits in this series use a simple yet versatile building system that consists of just two primary building components that can be woven together into countless 3D creations. Strings of LED lights are also included to illuminate the models from the inside out. The first five kits in the series will premiere at Toy Fair: Moonlight Elephant Safari, Magical Moose & Forest Friends, Starlight Kitty & Cutie Crew, Shimmer Shark & Ocean Pals, and Sparkle Unicorn & Friends. Each kit includes instructions to build four different models, but the possibilities are limited only by one’s imagination—all components are compatible across the different Creatto kits, so kids can combine them to dream up all sorts of distinctive, colorful creations.

“Creatto aligns with our emphasis on tactile processes to get kids thinking in different ways. Part model-building kit, part playtime prop, part decorative display piece, the goal of Creatto is to provide kids (and adults!) with an outlet for their creativity and individuality,” explains Quartin. “While definitely a fun and engaging activity, Creatto offers so much more than an afternoon of entertainment: it encourages self-expression, develops fine motor skills, and rewards originality. These are all so important for nurturing young minds.”

A new year of Thames & Kosmos’ products would not be complete without additions to its rapidly growing line of board games. Fans of storytelling games can look forward to a new Adventure Games title (Adventure Games: The Volcanic Island), as well as four new additions the highly-acclaimed EXIT: The Game series. Gamers who have been tracking the buzz garnered by the release of The Crew (Die Crew) in Europe late last year will be excited to learn that this highly-anticipated cooperative card game will be on display at Toy Fair and in retail stores by mid-March. Other board game releases include: The Liberation of Rietburg, a new game in the world of Andor; Aqualin, a two-player strategy game; My City, the latest from acclaimed board game designer Reiner Knizia; and Targi: The Expansion, a much sought-after extension for the popular two-player game, Targi.

The full Thames & Kosmos collection will be on display at New York Toy Fair, Booth #2851. Dedicated spaces in the booth will highlight key releases and will include The Amazing Tightrope-Walking Gyrobot showing off its tricks on a wire, Mega Cyborg Hand demonstrating its amazing gripping capabilities, and jumbo Creatto models showcasing the limitless possibilities of this new line. Attendees will also have the chance to test out the Creatto system and a limited quantity of promo kits, with instructions and pieces to build an orange light-up starfish, will be available for giveaway.

Code programs for your robots using an easy, visual programming app on a tablet or smartphone, which connects to the robots via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The robots use a combination of sensors to balance themselves. A gyroscope sensor is used to detect the angle of tilt of the vehicle. An accelerometer is a sensor that detects the acceleration of the vehicle. Together, these two sensors can tell the microcontroller—the robot’s “brain”—if the vehicle is tilting too far forward or backward and moving too fast forward or backward to remain balanced. Then, sensors attached to the motors, called encoders, can determine the current speed of the wheels. Using the app interface, you can program the robots to move at different speeds and in different directions, and you can program them to light up in various colors and play sounds.
