My Favorite Winter Getaways

Once the festive season draws to a close, our attention often turns to vacations. It goes without saying that NYC in January doesn’t promise tropical temperatures, but it is in touching distance from some wonderful winter getaways. From NYC, international travel can be a lengthy and costly process. For this reason, I often opt for the “staycation” around this time of year, especially when considering the current cost of living crisis. Listed below are some of my favorite winter getawaysthat are a mere few hours of driving outside of the city.

Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, NY

If cozy comfort is what you’re looking for, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge is for you. This set of lodges is conveniently located among Hunter Mountain. Whether you ski the slopes or indulge in the apres-ski menu of burned maple old fashioneds, crab dip, or hot pretzels, there’s something for everyone. In addition to the restaurant, there are multiple other common areas containing fireplaces, tchotchkes, books, and more. Similarly, there’s a stunning garden through which visitors can venture and see where some of the restaurant’s produce is grown. The location can be visited all year round, but it’s particularly magical in the winter.

Foxfire Mountain House in Mount Tremper, NY

Perhaps you’re more about kicking back with a good book instead of hitting the slopes. If so, Foxfire Mountain House is for you. This is the perfect setting to cozy up next to the fireplace in a blanket cocoon and let the city-living stresses melt away. With extensive dining packages, outdoor firepits, and pondside rooms, this is the perfect winter escape. Especially for those looking to leave the pressures of bustling NYC behind and immerse themselves in complete rural relaxation. Everyone needs a time out from the Big Apple from time to time, and this is the perfect location to make it happen.

Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian, NY

Maybe you’re in the mood for a trendy ranch retreat. This is what’s provided by Urban Cowboy Lodge. Surrounded by the Catskill mountains, stunning views are guaranteed, while the internal features include roaring fireplaces, pot belly stoves, mixed prints, and weathered woods. One aspect that sets Urban Cowboy Lodge apart from various other lodges is the decadent soaking tubs that can be found in the Alpine bathing suites. These sit beside the window, meaning you can take in the breath-taking views as you relax in the tub.

Ocean House in Westerly, RI

It’s fair to say that not everyone is looking for a nearby ocean when it comes to a winter getaway; however, there’s something so enticing about Ocean House. You can gaze out the windows at the crashing waves, all while you remain warm and toasty in your safe space. Delightful décor, bouncy beds, antique furniture, architectural columns, a grand stone-faced fireplace, and pretty piano are just some of the things you’ll encounter at Ocean House. In addition to the spectacular ocean views and endless features, the location also offers a spa and a five-star restaurant.

The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, PA

Last but not least is the Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley, which wins the medal for the coziest winter feels. With 11 blazing firepits or fireplaces, you’ll never be too far from warmth. In addition to these fireplaces, the lodge contains Horizon Edge Whirlpool and an indoor HydroMassage Waterwall. Similarly, there is a great spa, as well as opportunities for snowshoeing, ice fishing, and eagle-watching. Regardless of your interests, there’s something on offer at the Lodge, including a snow room, cold water bucket shower, and salt sauna.
