This Picture Book Makes Reading Fun Again

As families prepare for the back-to-school season, helping kids brush up on their reading skills can feel like another item on the to-do list. Author Teresa Argenbright is here to remind parents that getting "reading-ready" doesn't have to be a chore—it can be fun, imaginative, and even a little bit silly.

Her new rhyming picture book, Charlotte and Penelope and the Neighborhood Stage (Brown Books Kids | April 2025), is a joyful story about two sisters stuck home sick while their playful animal friends stage a backyard performance to lift their spirits. It’s packed with vibrant illustrations, elevated vocabulary, and playful rhymes that naturally support language development—making it a perfect tool for easing kids back into reading before the school bell rings.

This wonderful book has big, colorful and beautiful illustrations that are appealing to the eye, and large print to make reading to children easier, especially for us older adults. The story line is uplifting with a group of characters children will love.

About the author

Teresa Argenbright was lucky to have been raised by a mother who loved crossword puzzles and invented silly words to solve them. She developed her own love for language that grew through her experiences writing advertising campaigns, non-profit grant requests, and fun poems for friends and family. Teresa splits her time between Fort Worth, Texas, and the mountains of Colorado. When she's not creating stories, she can likely be found on the nearest dancefloor. Charlotte and Penelope and the Neighborhood Stage is her second installment in the Charlotte and Penelopeseries.
