From Sea to Shining Sea Book Review

When I first received the From Sea to Shining Sea Devotions book I wasn’t sure what to expect. I thought it was just going to be a typical religious devotional book, but as I read through the pages, I realized that the authors were taking me along their 50 state journey and telling me stories from every state they visited. It was actually really nice. 

Each chapter of this book follows a similar pattern, they visit a memorable place or historical site to give a brief lesson or story from that place,  and then apply spiritual application or biblical truth to it. This is usually followed up with a scripture verse, reflection question and a prayer prompt.

This is actually a nice idea, to incorporate religious reflection into my daily routine. If I can take the places that I visit or things that I do, on a daily basis, and apply a little bit of a devotion, or find some sort of spiritual connection to them, it can strengthen my relationship with God in a more meaningful way. 

Getting back to the book,I would describe it as part travel, journal, part history, lesson, and part devotional.I wouldn’t find the history part to be exhausted. I find it to be more of like a snapshot that introduces something unique about each state before transitioning into that devotional message at the end.

This book is an easy read maybe 10 to 15 minutes a day if you want to do each state separately. It’s really interesting if you love American history or travel in general.

I found the scripture applications to be simple and encouraging rather than overly theological. I find this book more of something that would be a daily devotional rather than a straight read through. 

This book is perfectly suited for anyone who enjoys learning a little bit about America and also spending time with God’s word. It’s not about becoming an expert on each day it’s more about how every day experiences, even road trips across America, can help point us towards spiritual truths.
